Being Prepared: Emergency Kits at the Ready - A WLPGA Case Study

This fact sheet by the World LPG Association describes emergency kits designed and provided by the Repsol Foundation in times of natural disaster. In these situations, portable liquid petroleum gas (LPG) systems provide a solution for emergency cooking, lighting and heating needs. Repsol has been working with organisations such as the Red Cross in disaster situations for many years. These kits can be requested by NGOs and national governments through Repsol and the Repsol Foundation. Each kit contains a stove, a basic kitchen set, a lamp, and height cartridges of 190 grams of butane.

LPG: A Primary Source of Energy in Disaster Relief

In Issue Issue 11| 1 – 30 November 2014 of its Humanitarian Bulletin, OCHA examines two SAFE-related concerns for IDPs in Myanmar: inadequate access to cooking fuel in Rahkine camps and the exposure of women and girls to gender based violence (GBV). The bulletin specifically mentions the SAFE Humanitarian Working Group in the final paragraph, references GBV research by FAO, and features a project by ICRC provide to fuel sticks made out of rice husks to three IDP camps.

InStove Stove Carbon Offset, Fuel Savings,and Energy Savings Calculation Methodology

In this 2013 factsheet, the World Food Programme provides an update on SAFE issues, initatives and outcomes in Darfur, Sudan. The influx of refugees has led to environement degredation of the surrounding forest due to firewood collection and has exposed women and girls to great safety and health risks. The WFP has worked with the local communities to roll out several initiatives including income generating activities, providing fuel efficient stoves and are currently pioletting a biogas program.

This factsheet makes the connection between firewood and pneumonia. When firewood is burned inside the home, toxic fumes are released which fill the lungs of those in the household, particularly women and children who are involved in the cooking activity. One of health impacts of the fumes in pneumonia. Refugees, who depend on firewood as a source of cooking and heating are more susceptible to ill health effects of firewood as they lack status, and access to better fuels and food.
